Surroundings of Cádiz

If you drive 30 kms. Northeast of Cádiz, you will find the city of Jerez de la Frontera, which is the fifth largest town in Andalucía. Jerez is famous for the elaboration of the worldwide known sherry wine. In order to know in detail the procedures employed for the making of sherry wine, it is worth to visit a winery. One of the most famous is Tío Pepe winery, which is shown in detail by an expert guide during the visit. Another issue which gives relevance to Jerez is horse breeding. If you want to enjoy the beauty and the training of Jerez horses, you should visit the “Fundación Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre” and enjoy the show “How the Andalusian horses dance”. Finally, Jerez also has a plethora of artistic landmarks that can be visited including churches, convents, palaces and museums. Among these monuments, we recommend the visit to the Church of Saint Michael built in both late gothic and baroque styles.

If you are interested in nature and hiking, you should visit Los Alcornocales Natural Park, which is located roughly 60 kms. East of Cádiz. A nice hiking trail is that connecting El Bosque and Benamahoma following the banks of the river Majaceite (8.8 kms. go and return). A more demanding hiking trail is that going to the summit of the mountain El Aljibe crossing the village of La Sauceda. This hiking trail requires to climb around 700 meters (you can walk, no especial climbing equipment is required), and the distance covered in the trip is around 14 kms (go and return). The beauty of this trail lies on the fact that you walk surrounded by centennial cork oak trees.

The coast between Cádiz and Gibraltar straight is partially occupied by long beaches of fine white sand facing the Atlantic Ocean. These beaches are among the most beautiful beaches in Spain. Among these beaches, we should highlight “La Barrosa” (8 kms. long) in Chiclana, “Zahara” (1.6 kms. long) in Zahara de los Atunes, “Bolonia” (3.8 kms. long) in Tarifa, and “Los Lances” (7.25 kms.) in Tarifa. In particular, Bolonia beach, with its roman ruins (village of Baelo Claudia) and its 30 meters high dune, is considered to be among the ten top beaches in Spain.
